What We Do

NFI implements a portfolio of interlocking programs that restore landscapes, make food systems more productive and nutritious, and scale enterprise solutions that benefit rural communities and women. Core pillars below reflect our field activities and technical focus.

Community-first: interventions co-designed with local cooperatives and farmer groups.

Research-driven: field trials and monitoring to ensure measurable impact.

Circular & climate-smart: resource recovery, low emissions, carbon sequestration.

1. Regenerative Agriculture

  • Description: Training and hands-on demonstration in soil health, permaculture, agroforestry and climate-smart practices to increase yields and restore land productivity.

  • Outcomes: Demonstrated yield increases (+150% average across supported farmers).

  • Offerings: Farmer field schools, seed systems support, compost and bio-fertilizer training.

2. Clean Energy for Food Systems

  • Description: Introducing energy-efficient processing, clean cookstoves and value-chain electrification to reduce energy use and costs in food processing and storage.
  • Outcomes: Energy savings in the value chain — 80,958,967 kWh saved.

3. Biochar & Bio-fertilizers

  • Description: Converting agricultural residues into biochar and nutrient-rich amendments that sequester carbon, improve soils and create marketable products.

  • Outputs: 78,000 tonnes of biochar produced; COâ‚‚ emissions reduced by 93,009 tonnes.

4. Reforestation & Conservation

  • Description: Native-species restoration to rehabilitate degraded landscapes, protect watersheds and increase biodiversity.

  • Outcomes: 83,000 hectares restored with native DRC species.

4. Rural Women Empowerment & Enterprise Incubation

  • Description: Vocational training, cooperative development, business incubation and market linkages — with special emphasis on single mothers and women-headed households.

  • Outcomes: 1,401 single mothers economically empowered; incubation of >10 cooperatives and 9 enterprises.
